Look behind you and keep that paw and tail prepared even as you move forward. In a world rooted in true community accountability and trust building, apologies might be enough (because you know your community watching you). But in this world nothing short of restitution really counts. Make your words matter. Be courageous when you make a mistake especially with people you name your friends. (And watch for it in those who name themselves your friend.) . As there are "five love languages" (know your family and close friends' and move accordingly) there are "five apology languages" – after 4 decades the only one that I can trust is action – restitution. Words ring hollow. Here are 5: expressing regret. accepting responsibility. making restitution. genuinely repenting. requesting forgiveness. HONESTLY, JUST DO THEM ALL. Otherwise you let systemic violence win. (It might still win but you? You can hold your head up). . It's not what anybody says, it's what they do – life lesson from a best friend . . Recently I was given a name in capoeira class – ten years in the making – and suddenly i realized my mother's hand on me is presenting . . She comes out sometimes.
